According to On Gossamer fit experts and
Allure’s How-To Guide, a bra should fit securely around your body, comfortably contain your breast, and stay in place as you move. You shouldn’t have to spend the day pulling up straps, tugging down your band, or adjusting your cups.
And while your bra size is a helpful starting point, the number and letter on the tag don’t tell the whole story. Different bra styles can fit the same body differently, which is why knowing how to check the fit yourself matters.
The easiest way to do it? Follow the same order every time: band, cups, center, underwire, then straps. Here’s what to look for in the fitting room, at home, and every time you put on a new bra.
A good fit should feel secure, not restrictive
A well-fitting bra should feel comfortably close to your body without pinching, digging, or making you eager to take it off.
More
common fit issuesinclude slipping bra straps, back pain, and irritating wires.
The goal is support without restriction. You should be able to sit, reach, bend, and move normally while the bra stays where you put it.
Before judging the fit, make sure all of your breast is comfortably positioned inside the cups. Then start your fit check at the band and work your way up.
Check the band first
The band is the foundation of your bra’s fit and support, so a bra band fit check should come before adjusting anything else.
Look in the mirror from the front and side, then turn around if you can. The band should run in a relatively straight, level line around your body rather than climbing toward your shoulder blades.
A bra band riding up in the back is one of the clearest signs that your bra band may be too loose. On the other hand, your bra band may be too tight if it digs uncomfortably into your ribcage or feels restrictive when you move or breathe normally. In either case, try another band size or style.
Level position, hook setting, and two-finger comfort
When trying on a new bra with adjustable hooks, start on the loosest hook. This gives you room to move to the tighter settings as the elastic naturally relaxes with wear.
Next, check the tension. You should generally be able to slide about two fingers beneath the band while it still feels secure against your body.
Remember that snug and uncomfortable aren’t the same thing. A new bra may feel firmer than an older favorite whose elastic has relaxed, but it should never feel uncomfortably tight.
Check the cups
Once the band is secure, move to your bra cup fit.
Your breasts should sit comfortably inside each cup without bra spillage over the top or sides. The cup fabric should also follow your shape rather than leaving significant empty space, which can signal that either your cup size or the style itself needs another look.
For a molded style like a T-shirt bra, look for cups that create a smooth line without noticeable bra gaps. An unlined bra will naturally follow the body more closely, so the fit may look different while still providing plenty of support.

Gaps, wrinkles, spillage, and cup shape
If your cups are too small, you may notice spillage at the top or sides. If your cups are too large, you may see empty space, wrinkling, or bra cup gaping. But size isn’t the only possible culprit.
Cup shape matters, too.
Two bras in exactly the same cup size can fit differently because of differences in cup depth, coverage, neckline, fabric, and construction. If changing sizes solves one problem but creates another, you may simply need a different style.
For example, someone who experiences gaping in a structured molded cup may prefer the way an unlined style such as the Cabana Cotton Unlined Underwire Bra or Gossamer Mesh Unlined Bra follows their natural shape. The right bra cup fit comes down to finding the right combination of size and shape.
Check the center and underwire
Next, look at the center of the bra between the cups, often called the center gore.
On many traditional underwire bras, the center should sit comfortably against the chest rather than noticeably floating away. If it doesn’t, check the cups again for spillage or signs that you need a different cup size or shape.
Then follow the underwire from the center of the bra around each breast.
The wire should surround your breast tissue rather than rest directly on it. Pay particular attention beneath the breasts and near the underarms, where an incorrectly positioned wire is often easiest to notice.
Most importantly, the underwire should feel comfortable. If a bra technically appears to fit but the wire consistently pokes or presses somewhere uncomfortable, another bra shape may simply suit you better.
Prefer to skip this step altogether? A wireless bra such as the Next to Nothing Wireless Bra or Cabana Cotton Wireless Bra offers support without an underwire.
Adjust the straps without asking them to provide all the support
Straps should sit comfortably on your shoulders without repeatedly slipping off or digging deeply into your skin.
Adjust them only after you’ve checked the band, cups, center, and underwire. If you have to tighten your straps significantly to make the bra feel supportive, return to the band and check its fit.
Your straps are there to help stabilize the cups, not compensate for a band that isn’t doing its job.
Keep in mind that bodies and shoulders vary. If a traditional strap placement tends to slip even when the rest of your bra fits beautifully, a convertible style such as the Cabana Cotton Convertible T-Shirt Bra can give you more flexibility in how the straps are positioned.
Move around before deciding
A bra doesn’t spend its life standing perfectly still in front of a fitting-room mirror. Neither should your fit check.
Once you’ve checked the band, cups, center, underwire, and straps, move.
Raise your arms. Sit down. Reach forward. Twist gently from side to side. Put your shirt back on and see how the bra looks and feels underneath it.
The band should remain relatively level, your breast tissue should stay comfortably contained in the cups, and the straps should stay in place without requiring constant adjustment.
Give yourself a few minutes, too. Something that feels fine for thirty seconds can become distracting once you’ve moved around in it.
When to try another size or another style
Sometimes the solution is a different bra size. Sometimes it’s a different bra.
Try another band size if the band consistently rides up or feels uncomfortably restrictive. Revisit the cup size if you’re seeing persistent spillage or significant empty space.
But if adjusting the size simply trades one fit problem for another, consider changing the style instead.
Maybe a molded cup gaps while an unlined cup follows your shape beautifully. Maybe an underwire fits correctly but you prefer the feel of a wireless bra. Maybe one neckline or cup construction simply works better with your proportions.
A bra can be the “right” size and still be the wrong shape for you. Fit is about the entire bra, not just the label.
Correct vs. poor fit: What to look for
Use this quick bra fit check whenever you’re trying on a new bra or wondering whether an old favorite still fits the way it should.
| Check | A good fit | Time to reassess |
| Band | Sits securely and relatively level around your body | Rides up, shifts frequently, or feels uncomfortably tight |
| Cups | Breast tissue sits comfortably inside the cups | Cups wrinkle, buckle, or leave significant empty space |
| Center | On many underwire styles, sits comfortably against the chest | Noticeably floats away from the body or presses uncomfortably |
| Underwire | Surrounds breast tissue without sitting directly on it | Rests on breast tissue, pokes, or consistently feels uncomfortable |
| Straps | Stay comfortably in place without doing all the supporting | Constantly slip or need to be overtightened |
| Spillage & gaps | Cups follow your shape with a smooth, comfortable fit | Breast tissue spills over the cup or noticeable gaps remain |
